The Governor has dedicated the Stewart L. Udall, Center for Museum Resource building.
When I visited with Jo Sherwood and she suggested a portrait painting for the building’s lobby. I don’t know what kind of portrait she was thinking of. I had visited her home seeing her work, her sensitivity toward earth tones and landscapes. So, we discussed creating a portrait for the Stewart L. Udall Museum of Resource building.
Looking at her work I had seen in her home, I said this artist is sensitive toward her landscape – I trust her judgment.
When her work on the portrait was finished I was impressed with her sensitivity, with my life and informality captured. I liked the open space with the mountains back draw and I said to myself this would fit in with the Museum building.
This is my feeling and I still feel that way capturing an important part of my life. Much of my life was dedicated creating new National Parks preserving landscapes for generations to come.
The artist has to be aware of the life of the person to be painted and what I am describing is my initial impression.
I have followed Artist Jo Sherwood’s career for four decades. She never ceases to surprise and enchant. With her classical background, she has painted the globe.

I have two lovely pieces by Jo Sherwood, one of which was a commission. Jo was able to translate a conceptual idea I was looking for into something unexpectedly delightful. Besides being able to enjoy her artwork, getting to know Jo and the rich tapestry of her life experience was also a great pleasure.
Jo was visiting in town and I was asked if I would like to have my daughter’s portrait painted. The idea intrigued me because I never had such a piece of art produced that would capture my daughter at the wonderful age of 9.
I agreed to the portrait after viewing Jo’s pieces of work on her website.
I had a special request, however, that the portrait illustrate my daughter on the family yacht. Jo amazingly agreed to travel with me and my daughter to the yacht! Jo made the little model feel very relaxed as she snapped numerous pictures. I explained that I wanted a series of 3 paintings of the subject in various positions on the yacht. Jo not only captured the expressions of my daughter that I know so well, but she also captured the yacht beautifully.
Her technique is so refined that one can sit and look at the paintings and actually point out resemblances my daughter shares with various relatives!
