CAPTURING LIFE THROUGH ART
Born and raised in Rotterdam, Holland, Jo Sherwood has been immersed in art her whole life. A third generation artist, Sherwood’s great-grandfather was an established oil painter during the late 1800s. However, her passion for art was sparked by her father who took her to visit many European museums throughout her childhood. Beginning her own art career, Sherwood graduated with Honors from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam, studying the classical techniques of the European Masters.
Sherwood has spent decades capturing remote and isolated cultures through her art, before they succumb to globalization. Her work holds a harmony and stasis that lends emotional depth to her subjects and offers a glimpse into their rituals and way of life through her historic conservation of cultures. Although she was trained in the classical oil techniques of the Masters, she prefers to render modern day traditionalism through her documentation of remote cultures. Sherwood uses sable and bristle brushes in a variety of painting styles. These styles include on location, alla prima, portrait, realistic, representational and universal painting.
Sherwood’s most recent exhibition, titled “Traversing Tibet,” centers around the people of the Tibetan mountains and captures the remote, traditional culture that slowly succumbs to westernization. Her paintings showcase the annual Tibetan Horse Festival, a rare and ornamental occasion. This exhibition was showcased at Mixed Emotions Gallery in Houston, Texas and gathered great support from the Houston community.
Another one of her exhibitions, “Disappearing Cultures of Rural China” featured paintings inspired by the Miao minority tribe of southwestern China. This collection was shown on both coasts- in Los Angeles at the Wilshire Ebell Gallery and in New York City at the Coda Gallery in SoHo. A unique aspect of both shows was the support of the Chinese Consulates in both cities, as well as the Mayor in Los Angeles.
Jo Sherwood was married to her late husband Peter for nearly 49 years and has currently opened a studio in Houston, Texas. She enjoys family time spent with her two daughters and five grandchildren. Although Sherwood just returned from Tibet, she has a future trip planned for Northern India, to capture another disappearing culture through sketches and painting. She travels most often with her easel to capture these civilizations on location.
